In this article we will look at the Golf Swing take away.
1 Initially, take the club back low to about a clock position of 7.30. At this point there should be very little upper body movement. This is not to say that the club and arms are not connected to the body. Remember, that the club will move much faster which is why there is no upper body movement yet.
2 The club, staying relatively low to the ground, should rotate during the take away and square to the circular are of the golf swing.
3 A good drill to practice the technique it feel the correct path your takeaway should follow. Place a club on the ground in line with your target and the grip closest to you. With the golf club you are holding, turn the face over so that the toe of the club points down and towards the target.
Experiment with short swings to find out which path is best to try and move the shaft down the target line with applied force. You will find that the best path is the same as the one you need to create in your takeaway.
4 Make sure to get your take away right and ensure you have a neutral grip. If your grip is too strong, you will probably close the clubface in your backswing. If it is too weak, you could over rotate the golf club head.
5 An over rotation of the Golf club head occurs because the forearms and wrists have rotated too early. This causes the club to be laid off at the top of the backswing resulting in sliced or hooked shots.
A common takeaway fault in the golf swing is to try and keep the club face square to the ball to target line. This leads to a shut face and a steep swing path , the shaft will be aiming right of the target at the top. Too often, beginning and intermediate golfers try and copy the swings of the pros. This isn’t a good idea, because the pros have hit so many thousands of balls that they can make subtle changes to their swings to achieve more power, more spin on the ball, or an intentional fade or draw. Tiger Woods, for example, utilizes a very late wrist uncock which results in more power and longer drives for him, but would most likely result in an errant drive if a beginner did it. The best swing for a novice golfer is a nice smooth, easy swing with very little or no wrist cocking/uncocking, a smooth weight transfer from back to front foot and a full body turn and follow through.
