How to Grip a Golf Club Properly

by admin on March 15, 2011

Proper golf grip is so important because the grip is your only connection with your golf club. You may wonder how to grip a golf club properly. I will try to explain few basic things.

Place your hands properly on the golf club. Well placed hands helps you better control the position of the club’s face. During swing your body turns, since your body is rotating your golf club must rotate at the same time to make perfect swing. Golf club should be like a part of your body.

There are three basic grip types : interlocking, overlapping and baseball grips. Overlapping grip setup is simple , little finger of one hand is placed over the index finger of other hand. Interlocking setup is similar just two fingers will be iterlocked not overlapped. Baseball grip – two fingers do not overlap or interlock they just meet together. If you are wondering which grip type is the best I only could say that they are all good. Just experiment with all three types and then choose the one which is most comfortable to you.

Grip pressure is important too. If your grip is too tense you will lose some yards of the tee. Proper golf grip should be in the middle of really intense grip and extremely loose grip. If you done everything correctly you should have a very accurate shot.

Only by practicing you could know how to grip a golf club properly. You should try all three types of golf grip and practice. Practising is the key to success.

How do I correct the issue of having the golf club turn in my hands during my drives?
Has anyone else had this problem? I am gripping it properly using the interlocking grip. I don’t hold it too tight nor too softly. My practice swings are fine, it’s just when I am about to hit the ball at point of contact. I swing my irons fine. Please help!
I mean at point of impact, the club actually twists or rotates in my hands so that the wrong part of the club contacts the ball.

Yes, I do wear a glove. Thinking about trying to wear gloves on both hands. However, I really would like to just correct the problem.

I use a Taylor Made Burner.

The club turns in your hand because you are not appying enough pressure with the 3 rear fingers of your lead hand. Perhaps the swing plane , which is flatter than those for your irons is confusing you. Try more pressure on those 3 fingers and hold that pressure through impact and the full follow thru.

Too soft a grip may have been the problem all along.

Maybe you’re losing your focus, or you’re thinking your club will turn therefore it does. Dry grip, dry hands, and firm grip.

Something is wrong with your grip. You think you have a proper grip, but if the club is turning in your hands, then you don’t. Without seeing your grip no-one here can tell you how to correct it. See a professional for help.

A quick lesson should do the trick. You could try hitting your driver like a pitching wedge on the range. About a three quarter backswing and smooth follow thru. You might just be swinging the club too hard when you go at the ball.

The 2nd most CRUCIAL fundamental in golf is THE GRIP. You, like so many others just place your hands on the club and away you go. It’s not that simple. Really top notch golfers practice their grip for an hour a day. You need to go to parsavers.com and discover what the proper grip looks like and how it feels. Once you discover the proper grip, your game will change immensely. If you don’t find the grip on that website, type "Bernie Najar, golf grip" in Google and you should find a good tutorial on the grip. Remember, without a sound, consistent grip, you are going to suck at golf for a long, long, time…

Your grip is either to strong or too weak. I don’t mean pressure, but how you grip. Try a stronger grip with your left hand. this means the club rests in your fingers, not your palm, and will promote a little draw if struck properly.
